Read Across America

I know it may be a few days late...but you can always celebrate reading...right?! There are so many amazing activities and resources to use when thinking of celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday. A great resource I found was the Teacher's Net Gazette where they depicted how to incorporate Dr. Seuss not only in reading but across the curriculum (i.e., math, science, reading, etc.).

This year my school put on a little assembly for the students where Cat in the Hat himself made an appearance! He read Green Eggs and Ham to the students and they loved it! If you're looking for useful resources and ideas to celebrate next years Read Across America Day at your school check out this link. Judy compiles the best variety of resources from reading activities to fun apps to use on your iPAD, as well as gives you a short history on Read Across America and how it was started.

I have to admit I should have used more technology to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday...I went the old fashioned route and read a story to the kids. Did you do anything special to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday as well as Read Across America?

  1. Samantha, I can only imagine how excited the kids must have been to see Cat in the Hat himself read Green Eggs and Ham. What a great way to bring this well known character to life! I saw on Judy's website that she posted videos of celebrities reading some favorite Dr. Seuss books (Justin Bieber was one). I thought that was really cool too. I'm sure it's exciting for students to see celebrities reading some of these books!

  2. I'm loving this site you posted with a variety of interdisciplinary resources :)I also found this link through Judy's blog,http://education584.blogspot.com/2013/02/read-across-america.html, with a variety of Dr. Seuss stories that are narrated/ animated. My third graders couldn't get enough of these digital versions...

  3. How exciting for the students...who wouldn't want to hear the Cat in the Hat read some of his best work!? :) I'm with you on this one...although we listened to Justin Bieber read The Cat in the Hat, I also went the old fashioned route and read my students The Lorax. The kids loved it! I also found a lot of great resources on Pinterest, just wish I had more time to use them all!

  5. I LOVE Dr. Seuss!! My kids did day-long activities for Read Across America last week and had a great time -- lots of us parents coming in to read, sing-along and laugh. It was a great day. You can never go wrong with Green Eggs and Ham!

  6. One school I was at had teachers read a page from one of Dr. Seuss's books using Garage band. Then it was 'aired' at a school assembly. The students LOVED guessing which page was their teacher. It could be turned into a wonderful digital story as well. Thanks for sharing your ideas!
